More and more employers are including wellness plans as part of their offering to recruit top talent. The Sanofi Canada Healthcare Survey 2020 found that 35% of surveyed employers offer a wellness plan for health-related taxable items, up from just 14% in 2017.
To provide our clients with the latest services in the industry, Brock Health now offers Wellness Plans to our existing clients. Here is a brief overview of what we offer.
1. What is a Wellness Plan?
A Wellness Plan is a taxable employee benefit to cover expenses promoting overall health and wellness. They go by various names. For example, “Wellness Spending Account”, “Lifestyle Spending Account”, “Health and Wellness Spending Account”, etc. These terms are all interchangeable, and most insurance or benefit companies will have some variation to offer.
While a salary increase would result in the same net amount to the employee’s pocket, setting aside an amount designated for wellness demonstrates a commitment from the company to the wellbeing of its employees.
2. How does it work?
A Wellness Plan functions almost identically to a Health Spending Account (HSA). Employees pay for the expense out-of-pocket, submit claims with receipts directly to Brock Health, we reimburse the employee, and we invoice your company at the end of the month.
As with HSAs, the employer can customize the plan including the total amount, carry-over limits, and limiting spending to certain wellness items. Changes can be made at any time at no cost.
3. What can be covered under a Wellness Plan?
Due to the taxable nature of the benefit, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) does not regulate the eligibility of expenses claimed through a Wellness Plan. This means all expenses related to promoting healthy living would be considered eligible.
4. What does it cost?
Identical to our HSAs, we charge a flat 5% fee on all claims submitted. There are no other costs.
